Hip Resurfacing- An Alternative to Hip Replacement

Description: Hip resurfacing is a form of arthroplasty developed as an earlier intervention alternative to total hip replacement(THR). In THR, the head of the femur is cut off and replaced with a metal ball and stem in the shaft of the femur and a plastic cup is placed in the acetabulum. However, the metal ball rubs against the plastic cup causing irritation. The objective of this paper is to summarize developments on Hip resurfacing surgery as reported in patent literature in the last 5 years.
